Ransomware Threats

By now I'm sure you've heard of a few pieces of malware, specifically being categorized as "ransomware", which effectively holds your data hostage until you send whoever authored the virus a certain amount of money and then allegedly, they will send you a key code to unlock your computer and decrypt your data. The first one that came about recently was dubbed "WannaCry" and did serious damage infecting many financial institutions, among other companies and individuals. It was a worldwide problem and hasn't stopped being a problem by any means; other ransomware is being developed regularly from the same code, but with more "mature" abilities that take advantage of other vulnerabilities to enhance its overall effectiveness. The newest threats that combine abilities are "Petya" and "NotPetya", the latter a day old and already infecting thousands of systems.

All of these threats use an exploit that is resolved by applying MS17-010, or can spread via email. Make sure your system(s) have MS17-010 installed, keep your antivirus up to date, and make sure to always beware of suspicious emails that direct you to websites or contain attachments. Be proactive and call or email us so we can help secure your computer and its valuable data. If you happen to fall victim to these attacks, unfortunately it's likely no one can recover your data, so act now!
