They Lurk In The Shadows Of Your PC...
What lurks, you ask? No, not rodents, though I suppose that's a possibility. I'm talking about digital rodents - viruses, spyware, worms, and whatever other terms fall under the broad category of malware. Most people aren't even aware they have a malware infection on their computer, unfortunately. Unless it's literally in your face, displaying advertisements and strange pop-ups on your screen at random times, malware tends to stay very well hidden like real rodents, not wanting to be found because that puts their purpose at risk. That purpose is what is truly scary in the world as we know it today.
If your system is infected it could be sending your personal information, including passwords, online purchases, banking information, and virtually anything you type on your keyboard, to some hacker's database in the nether regions of the Internet. It may never be used, or someone could be using it to make fake accounts and purchases in your name right now.
How do you know if that's happening? There are some giveaways, but it's not always obvious. If your PC has slowed to a crawl recently, it could very well be that malware doing its thing in the background, invisible but still making your email take forever to send or that Google search take much longer. Speaking of web searches, that's another giveaway; if your search engine is different than what you wanted to use or set up originally, it could also be a sign of something bad hijacking your searches and redirecting them to a different place. That different search site is probably capturing everything you search for so whoever is looking knows more about you. If you try to change the search engine and it stubbornly keeps going back to the other search engine, it's likely you have hijacking software running on your system.
Another possible giveaway is if your computer is crashing a lot all of a sudden. It can be many things, but if your computer is slow or your computer crashes a lot when you're using a web browser, a malware search is in order to rule out that possibility.
Malware needs to be removed as soon as possible, whether you use your computer for financial transactions or not, whether you use it for work or school or just playing games, and whether or not you have sensitive documents stored on its hard drive. Some of our customers argue that they don't care because they don't use their computer for anything serious or it's old or they didn't pay much for it, so it being a little slow isn't that big of a deal and it's not worth the time, money, or effort in getting it checked for problems. Remember, malware on your PC is taking away from the performance it gives you, its owner, robbing you of what you paid for and only benefiting the people that spread the malware to begin with for their own purposes. They can steal your identity and information, and they are stealing your time since you have to wait for your computer to work for them.
